A wizard is a person who is well skilled in magic, necromancy, occult, jinxes, and every sort of phenomenon that normal non-magic folk (muggles) cannot imagine. According to my point of view, every sorcerer is great in the aspect they do. Either the things they do may be cooperative or destructive.
Most of the greatest wizards had done many unbelievable things. A powerful wizard comes with several qualities, i.e., knowledge, experience, intelligence, the ability to concentrate, etc. The names of the most powerful wizards remain unchanged even though passed away. Some wizards did terrible things but they are great.
1. Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander
Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander was the most powerful wizard in the Midland. He was a wizard of the first order in the D’Haran War. He was a wizard who can make wizard’s fire with his hands. No one can stop him except a Confessor or Mord- sith. He is clever at Necromancy and Occult.
Zeddicus is commonly known as Zedd. He is an intelligent wizard. No one can surpass his wisdom. His wisdom is developed with his life experiences

The wizarding capability was granted to him by his family. His father was another great wizard and he was his teacher. (Caractacus Zorander)
Zedd was the keeper of the Sword of Truth until Seeker comes to make the prophecy true. He was the teacher of the Seeker in his mission. Only a wizard of the first order can nominate a seeker and teach him. He helped Richard Cypher to defeat Darken Rahl and the Keeper of the Underworld.
2. Merlin
Medieval dates were unknown. Most famous wizard of all time. Sometimes known as the Prince of Enchanters. Part of the Court of King Arthur. He was the guardian, manservant and best friend of Prince Arthur. He did his responsibility to the optimum level he can.

His knowledge and capability in sorcery cannot be explained simply. He is a bright spark in witchcraft. Once Merlin drew his appearance that would be when he was very old. He is a polymath.
He is an artful dodger who helped King Arthur to extend his realm.

3. Albus Dumbledore
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was commonly known as Albus Dumbledore. He was the signature of the excellency in Wizardry. He defeated the Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald in 1945. The only wizard who was able to defeat Grindelwald is Dumbledore.

Gellert Grindelwald was afraid of Dumbledore because he knew the eminence of Dumbledore in every aspect of magic. Though Dumbledore is a great wizard, he is a humble and kind-hearted man. He is a very responsible man. He was a headmaster in Hogwarts; School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
He was the owner of the elder wand. The most powerful wand of all time. He was able to find out the secret of Voldemort and Horcruxes. Voldemort also hesitated to attack Hogwarts because Dumbledore was there. He knew that Dumbledore is a great wizard and that he cannot be defeated. Voldemort built his realm in Hogwarts after the death of Albus Dumbledore.
In his youth, Dumbledore wanted to become the Master of Death and bring her dead sister to the living world. Therefore, he engaged in a quest of finding Deathly Hallows. When he realized the truth, he evades his quest of accumulating power.
He was a great teacher. He guided Harry, Hermione and Ron to find the Horcruxes peculiarly. That emphasizes his tactful nature
4. Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort is a Dark Wizard. His born name is Tom Marvolo Riddle. His father is a muggle. Therefore, he hated his father’s muggle name. And altered his name to Lord Voldemort.
Have you ever thought about the meaning of the name Voldemort? It comes from French. Vols de la mort (Flee from death/ death flight). That emphasizes why Tom Riddle wanted to be Lord Voldemort. Immortality is the only matter.
Voldemort wanted to be an immortal person and become the most powerful wizard. He did terrible things. At the first meeting of Ollivander and Harry, Ollivander uttered this;
“……. After all, He Who Must Not Be Named did great things- terrible, yes, but great” No one dared to call Voldemort by his name except Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore. Others used the phrases ‘Who Must Not Be Named’, and ‘Dark Lord’ to name him. They got afraid about his powers

He is a bright spark in Occultism, Necromancy and other sorts of Dark magic. He divided his soul into parts and protected them as Horcruxes to become mortal and ensure his powers and create a realm with his Dark Magic.
Voldemort is the heir of Salazar Slytherin. He is also a parselmouth as his ancestor Salazar Slytherin. He tried to kill muggle-borns in Hogwarts using a Basilisk. Basilisk cannot be controlled by a normal wizard. To control a Basilisk that wizard must be fluent in dark arts and inherited parselmouth.
Lord Voldemort killed Gellert Grindelwald in the prison Azkaban. According to that, we can understand he is a weird wizard with an avarice of power.

Gellert Grindelwald is a powerful and notorious Dark wizard. He wanted to create a new world that he can dominate. He is a silver tongue. Everyone can be deceived by his words. Once MCUSA (Magical Congress of United States of America) ordered them to cut his tongue because he can make followers by his words. Therefore, it was harder to make the imprisonment.
Gellert was a student of Durmstrang and he was expelled from his school due to being accused of doing nearly fatal experiments about Dark Arts. He was a part of the quest of Dumbledore in finding Deathly Hallows. His intention was to be more powerful as the Master of Death.
In 1945, Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald and broke down his dream of the so-called realm. Finally, he was killed by Voldemort. However, he is a powerful wizard
